National Road Safety Progress?
The first progress report was released earlier this year tracking the results to reach our road safety targets. Of ongoing concern was the National issue of drink/drug driving as well as pedestrian visibility or acting in unpredictable ways while walking near or on roads after drinking alcohol or taking illegal drugs. This too can be classified as illegal depending on the circumstances.
The ACT are targeting unsafe drug and alcohol driving behaviours across the Territory’s roads through; higher penalties to deter drink and drug driving, increased police powers to issue immediate suspension notices, a new combined drug and alcohol driving offence, and the expansion of roadside testing to include cocaine. The South Australian Government introduced new legislation to reduce road trauma including immediate loss of licence (ILOL) for high-level speed and drug driving offences.
