Service Update – AS 3547:1997 Breathalysers

As standards evolve, so too must the instruments we rely on. We are committed to ensuring our customers remain compliant, accurate, and confident in their alcohol testing programs, which is why we are providing advanced notice of an important upcoming change.

From 30 June 2027

We will officially cease repairs and calibration services for handheld breathalysers operating under the AS3547:1997 standard, including HH3, HH4 and LE5 models. This means all customers currently using these instruments will need to transition to instruments compliant with AS3547.1:2019 Breath Alcohol Testing Devices Part 1: Electronic Devices for Professional Use before then.

Understanding the Measurement Changes

One of the most significant updates under the revised standard relates to how alcohol is measured and reported converting breath alcohol (BrAC) to blood alcohol concentration (BAC).

  • Under AS 3547.1:2019 devices report results directly as breath alcohol content
  • Measurements are displayed as g/210L (grams of alcohol per 210 litres of exhaled breath)
  • This shift improves accuracy, consistency, and scientific integrity
  • Aligning with modern best practice and Australian Standard Requirements.

Key Improvements in the 2019 Standard

  • Greater Accuracy & Reliability
Stricter performance requirements ensure accurate readings across a wider range of environmental conditions, including temperature and humidity.
  • Improved Interference Resistance
Enhanced testing reduces the risk of false readings caused by substances such as mouthwash and/or other contaminants.
  • Stronger Data Integrity
New safeguards help protect against tampering and/or manipulation of test results – critical for workplace compliance and defensibility.
  • Tighter Measurement Tolerances
More stringent limits applied, particularly for workplace & industrial testing environments where precision matters most.

Transitioning to the 2019 Standard also Delivers Operational Advantages

  • Annual Calibration (instead of six-monthly)
  • Improved Instrument Durability and Reliability
  • Greater Confidence in Results for Safety-Critical Decision-Making

With the 2027 Deadline Approaching – Now is a Great Time To
