Bridging the Harm Reduction Gap in Medicinal Cannabis Use in Canada

A recent Canadian study has revealed a significant gap in harm reduction awareness among Veterans using medicinal cannabis (MC) for chronic pain. Despite widespread use – often daily – less than one-third of participants were aware of the Lower Risk Cannabis Use Guidelines, developed in Canada.

What Are the Lower Risk Cannabis Use Guidelines?

Created by public health experts, researchers, and clinicians, the guidelines aim to help individuals reduce the health risks associated with cannabis use. While originally designed for recreational users, many of the recommendations are highly relevant to MC users – particularly those managing chronic conditions.

Endorsed by several Canadian health organisations, the guidelines form part of Canada’s broader public health strategy following the legalisation of recreational cannabis in 2018.

Key Recommendations for Safer Cannabis Use

The Guidelines offer practical strategies for safer cannabis use. Key recommendations include delaying use until adulthood, choosing lower-potency products, avoiding smoking, limiting frequency of use, sourcing cannabis from legal and regulated suppliers, not using if pregnant or breastfeeding, and avoiding driving or operating machinery while “impaired”.

The guidelines also advise caution for individuals with mental health conditions, avoiding mixing cannabis with other substances, monitoring for cognitive effects, considering personal and family history of mental illness or substance use, and minimising multiple risk factors that may compound harm.

Why This Matters for Medicinal Cannabis Users

This research highlights the urgent need for education and safer-use frameworks tailored to MC. At Alcolizer Technology, we are committed to supporting informed decision-making through industry and awareness training, digital tools and testing solutions, and collaborative innovation that empower both healthcare providers and patients.
