Do You Support Pill Testing?

Here’s What You Told Us – And What’s Happening in Queensland

Last week, we asked our community a simple but important question:

Do you support pill testing services?

Here’s how you responded:

    • ✅ 78% Yes – It Saves Lives

    • ❌ 11% No – It Enables Drug Use

    • ⚖️ 11% Depends on Context

The results show strong support for pill testing as a harm reduction strategy. But despite this, Queensland’s government is moving to ban pill testing services, including those at music festivals.

What’s Changing?

The proposed ban is being introduced via amendments to a broader health bill — a legislative tactic that means it’s likely to pass without much resistance. Queensland’s single-house parliament structure means that if the government votes as a bloc, the changes will become law.

This would prevent organisations like Pill Testing Australia and The Loop Australia from continuing their work, even though they’ve operated successfully at events like Rabbits Eat Lettuce since the last election.

The Debate

Supporters of pill testing — including many health professionals — argue that these services reduce harm by helping people understand what substances they’re about to consume. They point to international evidence showing that pill testing can prevent overdoses and reduce risky behaviour.

The Queensland government, however, has taken a firm stance against both fixed-site and festival-based pill testing. Officials have reiterated their commitment to a zero-tolerance approach, stating that illicit substances are inherently unsafe and should not be legitimised through testing services.

What Happens Next?

While the government pushes ahead with the ban, some members of the opposition are expected to call for a formal inquiry into pill testing during a parliamentary health committee meeting this week. Whether that leads to any reconsideration remains to be seen.

What Do You Think?

With nearly 80% of our audience backing pill testing, this move raises important questions about how governments balance public health, safety, and personal responsibility.

  • Should harm reduction strategies be prioritised over zero-tolerance policies?
  • Is banning pill testing a step backward for festival safety?
