Rail Network Disruptions – Why Deliveries May Take Longer

Important – Rail & Road Disruptions May Impact Freight Delivery Times

We want to make you aware of ongoing freight delays affecting deliveries across Australia. Severe flooding in South Australia and New South Wales has caused disruption to both the east–west rail network and major road routes impacting freight movements.

What’s Happening

  • Flooding near the SA/NSW border has closed the main East–West rail lines used for national freight transport since the 21st of February.
  • The Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) has advised that the Sydney–Perth rail section is expected to remain closed for another 2-4 weeks to allow for assessment and repair. However, the Melbourne-Perth rail section returned to service on the 3rd of March.
  • Major highways in affected areas have also been intermittently closed due to weather, placing additional pressure on the road freight network.
  • Further severe weather is forecast for the east coast, which may extend delays.

How This May Affect Your Deliveries

  • Freight agents have held impacted consignments at rail yards until road access becomes available.
  • Where possible, they are sending trucks to collect freight and bypass restricted rail segments.
  • Transit times for new shipments may increase by approximately 1–2 days, subject to road accessibility.
  • Shipments departing Perth last week, and freight already in transit, may experience additional delays.
  • All freight this week will move via road to minimise further disruption and keep deliveries moving where conditions allow.
