HLTPAT005 Collect Specimens for Drugs of Abuse Testing

This training delivers the nationally recognised unit of competency HLTPAT005 – Collect Specimens for Drugs of Abuse Testing.

Designed to equip participants with the skills and knowledge required to conduct workplace drug and alcohol testing in a safe, legal, and ethical manner, in compliance with the relevant Australian & New Zealand Standards.

Anyone conducting workplace drug and alcohol testing must be trained and competent as a collector in accordance with:

  • AS/NZS 4308:2023 Urine collection and testing
  • AS/NZS 4760:2019 Oral fluid collection and testing
  • AS 3547.1:2019 Breath alcohol testing devices

Upon successful completion, you will be recognised as a competent collector for the collection of breath alcohol, oral fluid, urine and confirmation samples. 

What You’ll Learn

Training covers a comprehensive range of topics, including:

  • Roles and responsibilities of both the collector and donor
  • Best practice principles for privacy, confidentiality, and legal compliance
  • Duty of care, fairness, and cultural/gender sensitivity
  • Planning and conducting compliant drug and alcohol screening procedures
  • Communicating respectfully about testing activities and results
  • Managing challenges such as cross-reactivity and not-negative results
  • Conducting testing in remote or challenging locations
  • Handling refusals or non-compliance
  • Notification protocols and record-keeping requirements

Delivery Options

Online / Self-Paced
Includes a practical kit delivered to your workplace. Students have up to 60 days from enrolment to complete:

  • Online theory (approx. 10 hours)
  • Written assessment (approx. 2 hours)
  • Practical assessment via video conferencing (approx. 1.5 hours)
  • Requires AS3547.1:2019 approved Breath Tester, a computer and access to a reliable internet connection.

Cost $650 per person with no GST payable

Face-to-Face
Delivered at your workplace with theory and practical components integrated into the training session. Pricing depends on student numbers and training location – register your details for a customised quote here

Certification

Upon successful completion, students will receive:

  • Statement of Attainment for HLTPAT005
  • Statement of Attainment Card for display when conducting testing

If you experience any difficulties with your training, please get in contact with your trainer as the first line of support. All emails will be responded to within 48 business hours. 

If the matter requires more attention, then you can be referred to the National RTO Manager to assess the nature of the underlying problem, and they will develop an appropriate action plan. Alcolizer Pty Ltd will make available its full resources to ensure the student achieves the required level of competency in the qualification.

To enrol, please supply a copy of your initial Statement of Attainment with your booking. Due to the training nature of this course, RPL or Credit Transfer is not offered for this unit.
