A Closer Look at Operation RAID
In a bid to combat the alarming rise in road trauma, NSW Police have ramped up their presence on streets across the state, focusing on drivers under the influence of alcohol and drugs. This intensified effort follows concerning trends observed last month, highlighting just how dangerous our roads can be.
Operation RAID (Remove All Impaired Drivers) commenced at 12:01 am on Thursday, May 8, 2025, and concluded at 11:59 pm on Saturday, May 10, 2025. This high-volume, high-visibility operation saw Traffic & Highway Patrol officers conducting extensive checks to ensure road safety.
Alarming Statistics
In April 2025, 39 people lost their lives on NSW roads, with 131 deaths so far this year—19 more than this time last year. During Operation RAID, police conducted:
- Over 109,796 breath tests, resulting in 132 drink driving offences
- 6,841 drug tests, with 461 positive results
Beyond Alcohol and Drugs
While the primary focus was on identifying drivers under the influence, the operation also uncovered numerous other offences:
- 1,373 speed-related offences
- 286 instances of mobile phone usage
- 84 seatbelt/helmet-related offences
Operation RAID is just one of several statewide initiatives aimed at reducing road trauma. These operations are crucial for promoting road safety, educating drivers, encouraging compliance with road rules, and ultimately reducing the loss of life.
The Stark Reality
Despite the majority of motorists adhering to the law, there are still those who blatantly disregard road rules. The combination of drink and drug driving with high-speed is particularly concerning. Here are some alarming examples from the operation:
- A 34-year-old man was arrested after allegedly returning a breath analysis reading of 0.206.
- Another 34-year-old man allegedly returned a positive breath analysis of 0.143 and tested positive for cannabis and cocaine in a secondary drug test.
- A 22-year-old P-plate driver allegedly returned a breath analysis reading of 0.128 and tested positive for cannabis and methamphetamine.
- A 44-year-old was allegedly found with 96.26g of cannabis, 14.21g of methamphetamine, $1455 in cash, and a foldable knife in his car. He tested positive for methamphetamine and cannabis.
- A 20-year-old allegedly returned a positive roadside reading and was found with 320 capsules of MDMA, $1060 in cash, other substances, and large knives and hatchets in his vehicle.
