The Impact of THC Detection

With the increase in prescribed medication and the awareness of workplace safety risks posed by drug and alcohol use, governments and workplaces are implementing updated policies to address these concerns more effectively. Such swift changes can bring confusion and misinformation, clouding public understanding.

A recent article highlights this confusion by presenting claims regarding roadside drug testing, including “100,000 people using medicinal cannabis could be unfairly barred, and saliva tests will detect the drug days beyond any window of impairment.” While this represents progress toward enhancing safety, the messaging around oral fluid drug testing requires clarity.

With 35 years of expertise in the industry, we provide drug and alcohol testing solutions manufactured from our Western Australian factory.

Understanding Oral Fluid Testing – Oral fluid detection is generally between 0-24 hours, providing a snapshot of recent use and fitness for work purposes. On average, THC remains in oral fluid for 15 minutes to 24 hours, though factors like body size, metabolism, health, usage method, and potency can influence this. Our data shows THC may occasionally be detected up to 3 days after use in rare cases (e.g., heavy users with slower metabolisms), but the typical detection window is 0–24 hours.

Medicinal Cannabis comes in two forms; THC containing medications may result in a positive roadside or workplace drug test or CBD only medications which should not contain THC and therfore not trigger a positive result.
