As the colder months set in, it’s a good time to revisit hygiene protocols—especially when using shared workplace equipment like breathalysers. While there have been no confirmed cases of cross-infection from breath alcohol testing instruments, it’s still important to take reasonable precautions to minimise any potential risk.
At Alcolizer Technology, our breathalysers are designed with hygiene in mind, incorporating features that help reduce the risk of germ transmission.
Can Germs Be Transferred Through a Breathalyser?
Breathalysers, like any shared device, can become a potential source of germ spread if not used and maintained properly. That’s why our devices are built with hygiene-focused features, including:
-
- Wide, flat surfaces for easy cleaning
- Non-porous materials like silicone to resist microbial build-up
- Spit Trap, Non-Return Valve mouthpieces that capture saliva and prevent suck-back
- Anti-Blow-Back that redirect breath flow away from both donor and operator
Best Practices to Prevent Germ Transfer
Wall-Mounted Devices
-
- Always use a new, clean straw for each test and dispose immediately after use.
- Our wall-mounted devices are designed to direct airflow inward only, reducing risk to users.
- Please follow the recommended cleaning instructions in the user manual including cleaning the sample port. User manuals are available online here.
Handheld Devices
-
- Always use a new, sealed mouthpiece for each test and dispose immediately, ideally back into the original packet, then into the bin.
- Wear fresh gloves between tests to avoid cross-contamination.
- An optional spit-trap mouthpiece is available with a non-return valve for added protection.
Clean and Disinfect Devices Regularly
-
- Turn off the device before cleaning.
- Wipe down surfaces with a soft, moist cloth, followed by a dry cloth. Use non-alcohol-based antibacterial sprays or wipes to avoid affecting test results.
- If alcohol-based cleaners are used, allow at least 15 minutes for evaporation before the next test.
- Full cleaning instructions are available in your user manual as well as our quick cleaning guide.
Practice Good Hand Hygiene
-
- Wash hands thoroughly after each test.
- Use gloves when handling mouthpieces, straws or cleaning devices.
By following these best practices, you can help ensure your workplace remains safe and hygienic, even during the peak of cold and flu season. If someone appears visibly unwell, consider postponing the test or using additional protective measures.
